Does Tinder Work for Divorced Guys Over 50?

Tinder is the self-proclaimed most popular dating app available. But, since it’s known as an app for hookups and the majority of users are in their 20s, does Tinder work for divorced guys over 50?

Tinder can work for divorced guys over 50. While the majority of registered users are in their 20s and 30s, some of them are looking to date older guys. Additionally, there are also a large number of users in their 40s and 50s.

Whether you’re in your 20s or you’re divorced and middle-aged, the desire to meet someone new and form relationships is a feeling you’re never too old for.

The rest of this article will discuss subjects related to this topic, including dating tips for people in their 50s, the best dating apps for older age groups, and advice for dating after a divorce.

Tinder for Men in Their 50s

Tinder was created in 2012 and was initially used for college students. Its simple “swipe” design makes it easy for singles to connect with those near them.

Tinder advertises more than 5 million subscribers and over 70 million monthly active users.

It is one of the most popular dating apps, so it’s useful for various people in several different age groups. It’s also straightforward to use. Users swipe right to like someone’s profile or swipe left to dislike a profile.

A profile includes a photo (but you should upload several), brief biography, and a list of general interests. Tinder requires both users to like each other to generate a match, and once a match is made, the two individuals can exchange messages.

Now many will list a Snapchat or Instagram handle in their description, so that can be a way to contact them even if you don’t match on Tinder.

But there are some scams that come with that too (more on that below).

If you’re in the 50 and over club, you can still partake in the popularity of Tinder. To make it work for you, you must be honest. Use a genuine photo of yourself today, not one of you 20 years ago, and include accurate information in your bio and interest list.

You should also be honest about the type of relationship you’re seeking. Tinder advertises as being handy for friendships, sexual pursuits, or relationships, so the type of connection you make depends on you and your match.

But let’s be honest.

Tinder, like most dating apps, are unfairly skewed towards women. Women get hundreds of matches a day, and likely dozens of messages from guys they’ve matched with.

It’s just not like that for guys.

But guys can significantly up their chances for matches and dates with the right Tinder bio. I met my current girlfriend on Tinder and she is looking more and more like the woman I’ll spend the rest of my life with.

You can have that too.

Also be aware that Tinder shows you people in your area, but there are often women on vacation who live elsewhere that just happen to be in your town briefly and so they will show up for you.

And unless they list the city where they live, you may not know they aren’t really local.

Dating Tips for People in Their 50s

Honesty is the best policy, regardless of how old you are. When you’re just getting to know someone during the first initial dates, it’s vital to communicate with the other person openly and candidly

Be upfront about your expectations. Are you seeking a relationship or hook-up?

Either way, be honest about what you’re looking for. Honesty will ensure you don’t end up in messy entanglements with someone who entered into a relationship with you with different expectations.

I had been on Tinder for about a month and had a few matches, but had only seen 1 person (multiple dates) from there. She is 49 and like me, appears to be looking for a long-term relationship.

You should always be kind and courteous on a date, and don’t push the boundaries farther than your date is willing to push them. If your date is uncomfortable with physical advancements, respect them and don’t move forward.

Whether you’re in your 20s or your 50s, the most important thing about dating is just to be yourself. I know that may sound like a cliché, but it’s still true. Be your most authentic self when you’re dating, especially if you’re looking for a long-term relationship.

You can’t know if someone cares about you if you’re not being true to yourself. And another cool Tinder tip for older folks is that you don’t have to use your smartphone. Tinder works just fine on a laptop or desktop too.

Scams on Tinder

Be aware that probably 5% of the profiles on Tinder are scams.

Often they will only have extremely revealing pictures, but very little text other than a Snapchat or Instagram handle. Then you follow them there and start getting messages about escort services or Only Fans paid content. But some will just say they are down for hook-ups.

Now, I don’t have an objection to someone making money if they are clear and upfront about it and not out to scam anyone.

And I also think prostitution should be legal. However, from what I’ve heard, often these women create multiple profiles under different names, and in order to book an appointment with them, you have to register on a site to verify your identity.

Then guess what?

Your credit card number gets compromised and additional and/or recurring charges start happening and the girls drop off the face of the earth (if it was even her you were messaging in the first place).

So, bear in mind if it sounds (or looks) too good to be true, it probably is.

Unless she’s looking for a sugar daddy, a super-hot 24-year-old isn’t likely to want to hook up with a 55-year-old guy.

Best Dating Apps for Older Age Groups

Dating apps have been on the rise for years but have become even more popular in recent years since the pandemic.

With the overwhelming amount of dating apps available, you may feel stressed or anxious at the prospect of picking one out. In addition, if you’re 50 or older, the decision to get on a dating app can be daunting and stigmatizing.

The following is a list of the most preferred dating apps for older singles.

  • Bumble: This app is very similar to Tinder’s swipe design, but it’s up to female users to make the first move, which can be especially beneficial for divorced men who may feel unsure of themselves after a messy breakup. Bumble is unique and has many positive reviews.
  • Our time: This app is available on a phone, laptop, or desktop and prioritizes singles based on geographic locations. Plus, it’s free to sign up.
  • Hinge: If you’re looking for something more serious in a relationship and you like the idea of Tinder and its layout, then Hinge may be the best dating app for you. Owned by Tinder, Hinge is more than a “hook-up” app for finding connections.

Of course, you can try out Tinder, but many of its users are looking for less than profound connections.

If that’s what you’re looking for, it may be perfect. Another thing to keep in mind is that, while there are many millions of users in different age categories, the majority are in the younger age groups.

I have personally signed up for the following dating apps:

  • Tinder
  • Hinge
  • Stir
  • Match
  • Plenty of Fish
  • OK Cupid
  • Seeking

And from those, I’ve been on dates with 6 women.

Of those 6, the woman I met on Tinder is who I’ve had the most number of dates with (and yes, sex as well).

OK Cupid ironically is where I’ve had the worst luck (only 1 date and it wasn’t great) despite it being the most comprehensive in terms of profile options. And for a while, I was paying for a premium membership.

2 of the women came from Match (and 1 is a possibility for multiple dates). 1 from Hinge and 1 from Seeking.

Seeking is technically a sugar daddy website where younger girls want older guys. But I was clear I wasn’t going to be paying for dates (some of the women on there are basically just escorts). And I found a great woman on there who wasn’t looking for that.

And let’s be honest, in ANY relationship, you’re spending money anyway.

The biggest problem with most of these is no matter what I set my preferred age range to or distance radius, they still tend to show me women who are too far away or older than I prefer.

Dating After Divorce

Dating after a divorce can be difficult, so it’s essential to wait until you know that you’re ready to move on before you start dating.

Also, I would advise you to wait until the divorce is final before you pursue someone new. Waiting ensures that you avoid any messy legal entanglements and also opens you up to more meaningful connections.

Be sure that you feel emotionally ready to date after a divorce, and maybe consider therapy before you get out there again. If you have a final divorce decree, be sure you follow any specifications about future relationships that might be included in the document.

For example, if you have kids, make sure that you consider their well-being before you start a new relationship

Conclusion

Dating after a divorce can be challenging, especially if you feel like your age may limit your chances of finding a meaningful connection. The good news is that technology is making it easier than ever for singles to find others near them to form relationships.

Tinder is one of the most popular dating apps available.

Other than Tinder, though, there are plenty of other dating apps that you might find more suitable to your needs. The most important thing to remember about dating post-divorce is to be open and honest with your intentions and desires.

No matter what, a good Tinder bio, a good sense of humor, and knowing the trick to sending photos on Tinder chat, with a little bit of good luck are great ways to meet your perfect match!
